Question of the Day - July 7, 2005

1) QOTD: In pitifully geeky detail, please describe your greatest Nintendo moments of the past two decades.

2) Extra Credit: What is the most frustrating video game you've ever played?

1) Defeating Mike Tyson in Mike Tyson’s Punch-Out: After beating Super Macho Man like he owed me money, I was in the zone, ready for the champ. With sweaty palms, I deftly waxed that champ-turned-chump like a candle…. Booyah!

2) Rushing for nearly 850 yards in a single game with Emmitt Smith, on John Madden Football ’93: In a snow-filled Cowboy Stadium (not sure how that happened), Emmit Smith racked up nearly 850 yards against Barry Sanders and the Detroit Lions (Barry, by the way, had over 700 yards rushing). With a slippery field and two Hall of Fame running backs in their prime, defensive resistance was a futile effort. The only way I eeked out a win in this game was to play a punt coverage defense on every down, and use my return man as the safety to stop Barry Sanders. Having a 10 man front helped in goal line situations, as well (of which there were many). This performance definitely put Madden ’93 Emmitt Smith and Madden ’93 Barry Sanders high up in the pantheon of super powerful video game characters (though neither compared to the god-like ‘Tecmo Bo’ – Bo Jackson from Nintendo’s original Tecmo Bowl – who could literally run over every defender on the field on a single play, run back into his end zone, and then run 110 yards the other direction for a TD).

3) Pate vs. Harwell – Madden ’93: Technically, this isn’t one of my moments, but I witnessed this first-hand, and it was a classic moment in video game history. The Patesk had built a slim lead over the KevBeast in a friendly game of Madden ’93. As the fourth quarter drew to a close, the Patesk engineered a long drive and was looking to rub salt in the wound with a last second touchdown. Not content to run out the clock, the Patesk threw a short pass in the end zone as time expired. One of the KevBeast’s drug-addled defenders (LT, I think) picked off the pass in the endzone and rumbled over a hundred yards for the game winning touchdown. The Patesk’s jeers and taunts, which so recently were assaulting the KevBeast, quickly subsided. KevBeast’s victory celebration ensued, and the rest is history…

4) Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A ,Start: The greatest cheat code ever invented, and known to work on multiple Konami games such as Contra, Lifeforce, Rush ‘n Attack, etc.

5) Executing the ‘infinite lives’ trick on Super Mario Brothers: Spending hours trying to make an overweight Italian plumber hop repeatedly on a turtle shell is the essence of dork-hood.

Extra Credit: Definitely Super Mario Kart on the Super Nintendo. I mastered the game on the Nintendo 64, but on the SNES I was just hamburger. I usually died in the first 30 seconds of a multi-tap kart battle. In fact, I would have done much better at the game if I just sat motionless with the controller in my hand and drooled on myself.

1.) It was a nice fall day in Tuscaloosa, sunny, but cool and not a cloud in the sky. Or was it hot and humid, or maybe cold and rainy. It does not matter because this day, like many others, would not be spent outside in the elements, but in the conditioned environment that was the Landmark Apartments. The majority of it would be spent reclining in a half-broken chair with the mind focused on the old familiar that was Super Mario Kart. That day though there would be no computer controlled characters, there would be no” f*ck you Donkey Kong”, or “you B*tch Princess” uttered. It would be me, my ghost, and that what is the time trial. I had raced the track many times, sometimes shaving off hundredths of a second. Always inching my way closer to the sought out time, but never reaching it. But that day was different. After a few hours, several couch beatings, a couple thrown items, a slew of cuss words, sore knuckles from punching things, and one now fully broken chair I outpaced my time trial ghost to break what was believed to be record for that track.
2.) Other various Super Mario Kart adventures such as hitting speed boost at the right moment on Rainbow road allowing you to jump across half the track. Watching the top five finishers cross the finish line all within 8 hundredths of a second. Obtaining all ranking cups on every board unscathed in the process because we were racing as miniatures the whole time. …and the list could go on, perhaps others could add some.
3.) Watching Mario plummet to his death after my sister defeated Bowser because I had convinced her there was a secret area down in “that” hole.
4.) Watching hostilities grow as everyone played FIFA soccer and jeering each other by repeating various phrases in falsetto voices.

Extra Credit: Super Mario Kart was probably by far the most fun and entertaining game to play. Consequently, it was also the most irritating and frustrating one as well. There is nothing like getting ready to cross the finish line and having an oversized ape in a kart half his size bump you off the track. Even more frustrating is the N64 version.
